Exactly. Kazuma got something far better than Subaru could hope to have: a functioning brain.
He would either realize Emilia is more trouble than its worth on the first or 2nd loop and let her go, or time up Elsa's arrival to swoop in and get out before she even arrives.
Also if he realizes Reinhard's power level and personality, Kazuma has no ounce of pride in himself and would stick to Reinhard like a tick to be protected by him.

It gets better and then it goes to shit. It reaches a peak at the end of the twister episode where I legitimately felt bad for both Subaru and Rem and wished the next loop he will do better. It started to fall of during season 2 and hasn't recovered.
