It turned Rengoku into a symbol of tear-jerking emotional porn.
In the manga, Rengoku’s death was more understated, carrying a subtle air of sadness while still letting his presence feel dignified and unyielding, even in the face of death.
He never once appeared weakened, only heroic.
The anime, on the other hand, made his final words and the background music feel like they were shouting, "Look, I’m about to die, so get your handkerchiefs ready!" It was a little overdone.
