I agree with you mostly. I know profit motivates though. I don't see a large group of people coming together to work on a massive AAA scale project without some other incentive than 'artistic impulse'. I believe art for arts sake only applies to the individual level and there is only so much one person can do. Big games need a huge amount of man hours across various disciplines.
