I don't like self-inserting, I only make parties consisting of the five flattest, cutest, and most loli-ish portraits available. For me, the protagonist of these games are collectively the entire guild itself which means NPCs are just talking to the five active guild members. "I" don't exist in the game as a self-insert or any kind of invisible guild manager or whatever. That's the thing with EO though, the "protagonist" of these games is very open-ended and people are free to view it however they want. There's not really a right or wrong way. And basically this is why I'm against Story mode as well, I don't want the games deciding the protagonists for me. There's not many turn based RPGs where I can have a party that fits my tastes like how EO does it.
