Beating the final boss with no healing, skills, tools or accessories was annoying, but I think I got it in 7-8 tries.

Because he was basically Gilgamesh, feeling way too cocky and full of himself, and wanted to play with his food, allowing the enemy to get extremely good hits on him, and then die because Julian's authority over the Ocean was stronger than his control of water.
Now that he's fucking dead he's not gonna fuck around anymore if he can help it I guess, especially when he's on a timer.
