It is so ridiculously easy to live in a van. I did it for five years continuously with a full time job, and the last two of those years was actually in a hatchback car because I had downsized my possessions so much that I didn't even need a van anymore. This was mostly in the northeast where winter temperatures could get below zero overnight regularly.

For 99.9% of human history a "house" was something that a man could build by himself or with the help of a few family members out of natural materials in just a few weeks. It wasn't some elaborate fucking thing full of all kinds of technology that needed a team of professionals to build and cost 20 years average salary and required a loan. Even without a van, you could spend $800 on a quality wall tent with stove compatibility and get some good camping gear and squat on public forest somewhere and have a higher quality of life than most people who have ever walked the Earth. The whole concept of "needing" a modern construction dwelling with plumbing and electricity is brain damage. People who are spending an entire paycheck on rent every month should be culled from the gene pool.
