You're absolutely correct, but even in that case (especially even if things thawed) the entirety of advancement would have been painfully slow due to the terrain alone. Spurdoland in the poverty days of 1939 was even more notoriously horrifying collection of ogre swamps, almost impenetrable coniferous forests and waterways so vast and dotted that you'd be lucky a single road lead to anywhere important, which would lead me to believe the only viable way to invade the country even today is either via paratrooping into key spots, invade via sea or just glass the entirety of the country into ash. I'm in favour of the third option. No sane person wants to contend with the nature here and the same goes for most of the Western Russian border.
