During the second punic war, Rome lost 20% of their fighting age males in a single battle and by the end of the war 15-20% of the entire adult male population was dead. That didn't do carthage any good though because their entire civilization was wiped from existance, the romans left the city of carthage a completely destroyed ruin for 100 years before starting to rebuild anything there.

I've heard this so many times out of the commies for the last ten years. The people who parrot this rhetoric the most often don't realize they wouldn't be one of the card carrying party members who's safe from the purges.
