It's amazing playing games and then seeing something completely false that's disproven by playing said game being passed around like it's gospel. DL1 is the one that gutted mechanics. Half of the combat moves for two handed weapons that were present in their previous game were removed, making them half useless. Both Dead Islands, you could swing two handers back and forth just like one handers, but DL1 made it so whether you're doing a power attack or a normal one, you're only swinging one way and waiting for the weapon to reset. It's shit. It also got rid of player shadow, and gutted the gun system. Dead Island + Riptide, guns leveled and scaled just like melee weapons, and you could get ones with elemental effects just like melee. DL1? They're all static, outclassed by later melee weapon scaling bar none, and have no elementals.
2 actually restored the two handed weapon attack moves and player shadows. It also restored the gun scaling with higher level ones doing more damage, but I haven't bothered checking if they restored elementals to them because I dipped out of caring about the retcon of restoring guns in that game once it became revealed everything but the blue tier starter pistol you get involved live service grinding to acquire and you couldn't just buy or find them in the world.
