A less toxic example in a 5e game earlier this year.

>Be me, cleric mc clericface
>Be other player, rogue mcrogueface
>Be other other player, rare full warlock
>Be gunther...
>op race you can't normally play
>starts with a curse that makes him stronger
>downsides negligible
>starts with minmaxed items
>(the rest of us were told to pick something fitting)
>paladin
>hexblade dip
>face full of cheese
...
...
>we laugh our asses off
>hyper-buff gunther in fights
>HERE HE COMES
>WATCH OUT
>cleric laughs his ass off while shield other + bless gunther decapitates a vampire
>rogue is luring enemies into him, then switchhitting
>dm stops playing spooky.mp3
>Redsun.mp3
>warlock snipes people gunther can't smash
>We're having fun
>Even the gm laughs at it
>We're having fun.

If you're wondering what the moral of this story is....it's a real story, so nothing, really. But if I had to pick one, it'd be that even if people abuse mechanics, if the table is level-headed you can always enjoy the game.
