That and showing the other people in your group how you are making your characters.

>make a purposefully mediocre tome of battle character for a 3.5 campaign
>dm constantly whining about how broken my character is
>despite having 3 full casters who solve encounters with single spell casts
>naturally he runs the game in such a way that casters basically get their entire daily spell allotment for every fight
>move to next campaign
>"hey guys, I want some less powerful characters this time around so tome of battle is banned"
>"oh, so are other tier 3 and up characters, like wizards and clerics banned too?"
>dm stares blankly at me "what?"
>show him the 3.5 class tier list
>gives some wishy-washy response not really addressing this information and just says tome of battle is banned
>decide fuck it, I'll just play a wizard and show him what happens when you really want to break the game

We haven't started the next campaign yet, so no story yet. My plan is to play entirely PHB wizard material though, to really drive it in.

A less toxic example in a 5e game earlier this year.

>Be me, cleric mc clericface
>Be other player, rogue mcrogueface
>Be other other player, rare full warlock
>Be gunther...
>op race you can't normally play
>starts with a curse that makes him stronger
>downsides negligible
>starts with minmaxed items
>(the rest of us were told to pick something fitting)
>paladin
>hexblade dip
>face full of cheese
...
...
>we laugh our asses off
>hyper-buff gunther in fights
>HERE HE COMES
>WATCH OUT
>cleric laughs his ass off while shield other + bless gunther decapitates a vampire
>rogue is luring enemies into him, then switchhitting
>dm stops playing spooky.mp3
>Redsun.mp3
>warlock snipes people gunther can't smash
>We're having fun
>Even the gm laughs at it
>We're having fun.

If you're wondering what the moral of this story is....it's a real story, so nothing, really. But if I had to pick one, it'd be that even if people abuse mechanics, if the table is level-headed you can always enjoy the game.

This, CoDzilla is the perfect show of everything wrong with the high tier classes. Hell they're even so good at combat innately that you can show how his presumptions about your martial were absurd simply by being

Yeah. Especially since it avoids him trying to screw you over by destroying your spellbook in a way you can't prevent, and you can easily out-martial non-ToB martials.

Yeah, fair point. It will probably make my job easier if he decides a magic mart isn't available to buy spells at or whatever.

I want to run what is essentially the opposite of this. An oldschool game where every PC is overpowered except for one who is a fighter with 9 STR as his highest ability score. This Tiny Tim is the chosen one and the other characters have to keep him alive until he fulfills his destiny (reaches domain level play).
The immediate flaw is who plays as Tiny Tim?
>Having to babysit a DMPC will cause resentment, even as the campaign goal
>Player who plays as Tiny Tim will very likely feel left out as his fighter can't do shit

Why? If that's what people agree on. Babying a weak NPC can be cute and fun.

Alternatively, a player might enjoy being coddled for his character. Frodo wasn't a good fighter by any means, but his mcguffin was the most important thing ever and he mattered. Just need to give the char some unique powers.

The reason we had fun with gunther is that everyone participated in combat. Even if we focused on making him our frontliner, everyone still had their part and things to do and adapt to. Obviously the roleplay was good too but that wasn't in the story.

The problem with tiny tim is that he just can't do much as a fighter with 9 str, even if he wants to. There are ways around this, though.

Making tiny tim a really good face character could be one of them, or making him very knowleadgable. All things considered, at least in d20 systems, a caster would suit him better since you can still support people just fine if anything.

pre-3e, 9 str fighter is very doable
it's just if you have something retarded like a 2e Dark Sun Half-Giant Dart Thrower throwing 3x1d3+12 damage darts per turn that Mr. 1d8 Longsword Enjoyer sticks out

>want to make a more of a support character
>no anon I need you to play someone strong to carry combat since everyone but us are new players t. gm
>make something strong then
>get cucked on loot and other improvements into oblivion because I'm already strong while everyone else needs to catch up
>about 80% through the campaign and I'm still without any improvements to my kit beyond what I started with
>still more effective in combat than 90% of the party

This is me right now. I made an actual tank while everyone else tried to be a hero. All of my items are just build enablers, most of them really cheap. The rest of the party is constantly getting big number loot to make their damage even higher. They've fully embraced rocket tag mentality.

The DM specifically banned an ability that would allow me to do consistent damage in fights, knowing that it would allow me be too independant. I consented, since my intent was to support, not to make the party feel bad.

We recently got a new player who has respectable dps but actually used his brain when building, and now they feel bad anyway. sucks to suck.

I'm just kinda mad because the only opportunity at an upgrade I've gotten was a blind 50/50 between getting something that would actually benefit me immensely, or something that would benefit the whole party in a smaller scale per person, but comparably as of whole
but without knowing what each choice would lead to, and narratively it also made sense for my character to pick the latter, so I basically didn't get to then lay into the tactical nuke I was asked to play either
>inb4 but have you tried talking to the GM about it back then
yeah, I'm basically bringing months old shit out because the game has long gone past that situation

Same anon and story, but I will retall my experience with the worst player of the group.

80% of his build was just damage. 20% was flavor. Flavor is good, but he wasn't a glass cannon, he was a paper artillery.

The first time he ran into an enemy and got one-shot, I told him privately that he should get something to fix it. I gave him tips. He told me to tank better, so I did.

The second time, I got some abilities specifically to keep him alive. He proceeded to ignore them, run in alone and die again.

I told him one more time that his build was not functional. Running in leeroy style is okay, I said, but you need to survive at least a turn. He said he couldn't sacrifice any of his damage.

While this smartass wasn't the only problem, when the new player with an actual build arrived and showed him how it's done, his first move was to message me and start frantically going over his options, including everything I told him about already.

Jealousy is so powerful sometimes.
