Japan's isolationism is... Kind of overblown? Sort of? They still interacted with the outside world, although largely constrained to fishermen and mariners. Occasionally, Jesuits and other missionaries would try to infiltrate the island but would quickly get shushed out by the Interior ministries hence the inspiration behind Silence. Ironically, apart of the reason why the Tokuwaga went isolationist was the spread of Christianity.
