I think you are massively undervaluing how much of the (already small) paying readership would have dropped it outright without "a character named Sally that kind of looks like Sally".

Also, allow me to be frank. Sally is Archie Sonic's love interest. That is the core of who she is as a character. If you take that away, there's not any amount of leaning on whatever else is left that could hold her up. So I have sympathy for Ian there.

This is also true and part of why I don't like Ian. Because you can see the same problem with the atrocities he's inflicted on poor Amy. I think "having a crush that cannot be fulfilled because of mandates" hits a psychological pain point for him or something.
