I want to dial it back to narrow down the issue. Reboot Sally Acorn isn't a foil to Sonic anymore, she isn't Sonic's love interest. She doesn't have Sally's episodic bickering with Sonic. She isn't ostensibly more serious than Sonic because that particular incarnation of Sonic is very serious. She isn't flirty. She isn't motherly towards Tails. She is self-critical. She is a ground combatant.
Why is this character called Sally Acorn? Why wasn't she simply vaulted if every last character trait and trope was considered incompatible?
The only one of these that was forced by Sega was her being Sonic's love interest. Totally fair. But we know that Sega did not ban the concept of attraction. They said stop tying Sonic down in an OOC pairing.

Ian did go through the series in preparation for the planned comic epilogue. From what he can remember, the dynamic between the 3 was the most fun, solid part of the show. You had 3 different aspects of the Sonic persona playing against itself. Vanilla Sonic, Manic was more laid-back, and Sonia who was more uptight. There were some fun banter and interactions from that. If Sega suddenly announced that Sonic had family and he had to introduce them then Ian wouldn't be sure if it's worth preserving the royalty aspect. There would be fun in them having become separated for some reason and rediscovering each other and coming to terms that they're no longer singular entities, they have family. Sonic would be cool with it, a little excited. Maybe Sonia doesn't quite want to get on board with this, she likes being herself but that sense of belonging would win her over. Manic, let's say he's on the wrong side of the tracks. He's run a couple gigs with Rough and Tumble, an odd job for Clutch. He's not a bad guy he just does what he needs to do to survive. Maybe he doesn't jive with this world hero thing that Sonic got. There wouldn't be judgment on Sonic's part, he would just be happy he has a brother. That eventually wins Manic over and maybe it's not so bad to be on the straight and narrow.

Not even I entirely understand my aversion to it. Being liked or wanted often feels strange and uncomfortable, even if I'm grateful.
I don't understand why they want to talk to me. Even when they explain why, it both makes sense and doesn't. I read and understand it but can't digest them. There's a disconnect between my self-perception and their words.

I eventually noticed I unconsciously gravitate toward people and groups that dislike me. Their insults are familiar. Sometimes I even wish people who like me would hate me instead, and I can't explain where it comes from. It's not that I don't want people to like me, I do. But it feels alien. Misplaced. I wish I were born differently so I could know what it's like to think like they do, and maybe the people and things around me would make sense. I don't know how to fix it. I'm sorry for that.

Sonic Movie 3 draws a comparison between Shadow losing Maria and Sonic losing Longclaw.

It's an unfortunate circumstance where, like... your mother, who you have fond memories of but lost when you were little, also ended up committing mass genocide on an enemy tribe she was at war with, leaving only one surviving member that would go on to be your rival and then brother-like figure.

She is "the side kick" in so far as being a supporting character who complements Sonic's skills, carries Sonic around like Tails in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, works as the mechanic and vehicle enthusiast who ensures Sonic can traverse the planet, and reports and record his adventures. In that case, this Tailsko could instead see in Sonic a big brother that's incredibly cool and a point of reference to follow. However, it's interesting to see how much of your enjoyment of Tails comes from his character filling a male role, so your distate for this change still remains.
