Anon, I think you're greatly misunderstanding the partnership with Critical Role. They aren't paying CR for their likenesses, CR invested in them because CR wants a CR game made by the people who made the good old Telltale games since they have a massive captive audience who'd love nothing more then to get to play a character who interacts with all their favorite VAs. As to why they made the gameplay elements, go read the artbooks. Pic rel shows that they literally slapped together assets into an existing Unreal template for the hacking, so it was as low effort as it could be. I also think you're overestimating how much even an eceleb famous tier amateur costs, which also comes with free massive marketing because they're going to talk about it and then play it in front of their audiences. This was not some massively high budget project, you can see from the credits how small AdHoc is as studio. This wasn't even a single A project, this was barely above "dudes labouring in a garage somewhere".
