there are a few McDonald's up and down the country that have metal detectors (and often police) at the entrance.

i looked into it, i forgot the specifics but you can't just randomly ask people to go through metal detectors out and about. someone wrote a FOI request to the police. gist was they're on loan from the police, and officers are outside, but the actual detectors are on McDonald's private property so it's allowed.
