Bros I want to make a Third Person 3D Fantasy game. I'm very experienced in Godot 3D and am a high level artist, I can create pretty much anything in 3D, rig it, animate it and I'm a good painter. But I have a full time job and a new baby. I know making a full RPG alone is too much for a solo dev, but I find making a linear hack and slash too dull. I think i'd like to try for something like a Zelda-like gameplay structure where I don't have to deal with complex character builds, RPG systems or tons of different armor sets / weapons and can keep the "verbs" of what the character can do fairly minimal, but then allow for greater interactivity and reactivity with those limited verbs.
So even that is obviously quite difficult and complicated, so for graphics I want to also maintain a level of reasonable low complexity. I want the art style to be classic fantasy, with some stylization. Something that can have some character and exaggeration, but still represent violence and dark themes well. Think Warcraft 3 or Gothic or Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask.
On one hand, I could go super low poly retro and do a pure N64 style... but that might not offer enough detail to express my vision... and N64 grows more obscure and niche over time. I could go more detailed and get closer to a PS2 game or Gothic or Warcraft 3, but more detail = more work = more time = less content in the game.
What do you guys think? Basically I want to make a very small Ocarina of Time style action fantasy game with a darker yet stylized low/ mid poly art style... and I'm trying to nail down a targeted art style so I can build out my workflow. Any games I should look at as a refrence of an interesting art style to study?
