I am making an anime music video at the moment to see if I can animate anything at all that evokes an emotional response with the viewer. I also want to see how far I can go with implementing automated animation systems. This as a cutscene creation system for my game.
It has camera switching, dolly tracks, look animator, eyes animator, expression controller, teardrop controller, cloth physics, hair physics and a bunch more systems. It is all controlled via Unity's timeline (NLA editor).
So far, I am happy with the overall quality,. However, the storyboard / camera shot list is still lacking.
I am wondering what /v/ thinks. Sorry for the low resolution on the video. Couldn't upload to 4chan otherwise.

Maybe they will make an AI game engine and you just pick the archetype of game you want to make and answer like a quiz for things you want in the game. Trying to make a game from scratch with AI seems very bug prone currently, coders may keep their job for 1 more year.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the body animations are quite stiff. They are from animation asset packs. I am not an animator at all and this is basically the first cutscene / sequence I ever made.
I bought a Rokoko smartsuit and am thinking of recording the body and glove animations and checking if that leads to smoother body animations.
What do you recommend for improving my skills with regards to animation? Are there better animation packs out there? Should I enroll into a specific animation class?
is there anything equivalent to blueprints in godot? i always liked visual prototyping for small logic scripts.

Its going alright, steady progress, but morale is sometimes low because of the fucking AI. My fear is that by the time i release something (in at least 3-4 years), AI will be even more advanced and capable. Whoever thinks AI is a bubble is ignorant or just coping. Probably because all the actual devs who could do more than "search and replace 'godot' > 'redot'" went to the Blazium engine.
The Blazium engine has actually developed their own nodes, most noted one is multiplayer lobby nodes, which they used in their game of Hangman.

Convince me to use Godot by solving this problem.
Godot does not support off-screen render targets for dynamic textures or multi-pass shaders.
This means that Godot does not support a basic feature all GPUs have and is worse than Gamemaker which has a robust "surface" system.
People try to work around it using "viewports" but this is insane. they're not fit for purpose.
As far as I'm aware to this day no one has added custom render targets to Godot.

using view ports is the hack and it's stupid and inefficient.
The little rectangle in the top right is displaying a "render target" a custom canvas that can be stored in the GPU. It doesn't need to be part of your scene or shown on any camera, it can just be stored internally, separate to your main render target which is your game window.
It's dynamic and can be used as a texture and in shaders.
even the N64 had this feature, but Godot does not.

you want to dynamically change the window size based on stage size? seems fucked up but if you're using a TileMapLayer for your tiles, look up the documentation it has, I'm pretty sure there should be a function or variable for getting the rect size of the used area, then you just multiply the x and y of that by the cell size x and y and you get your new resolution

wait, actually, you might not need to multiply anything depending on what the function/variable spits out, I didn't realize that. if it's the actual full rect of space occupied by active tiles then using that raw number SHOULD be fine I think, if you're unsure try manually adjusting the window size so you know the values it SHOULD have, then see how to automatically reach that value

Not a Godot dev but you should be able to force the resolution in project settings.
When starting out set it manually to be that specific size, later on when you get a hang of coding you can make it more dynamic (to allow 2x scaling for example).

To be fair my concern is how they're been slightly bloating their engine because of the 3D. It's inevitable if you want to have 3D you will have to add some bloat to your engine so it can run it properly.
But the bloat always starts with good intentions. We've all seen it happen everywhere else. I just hope Godot is not going down the same path.

It even has a working stock market system, and if your extractors suffer a power outage, the respective resource charts crash.
Also, it has networked vehicles with multiple seats.
You can persuade and take over civilians, but I haven't worked much further on that system.
I'll probably see how Toplitz's next game (that vampire thing) handles minions. I want base building via minions (warcraft style) but I am not sure if its feasible network wise.

Game dev is the bottom of the barrel in the tech world. A retarded 16 yo can make a game.
The hardest part about the whole processes is the creativity element. Coming up with something new that hasnt already been done 20000 times and that retards will want to buy
THAT is the hurtle you have to cross when making a game now-a-days

Well you're obviously going to have to "clone" something. At least in gerne. There are only so many ways you do a platformer, after all it is a platformer.
The creatively capital you want to spend on is coming with something original in theme and story. Different characters so on.
A platformer is a platformer. But Ori and Hollow Knight are two different games.

gradient/palette swap generator is done. basically works by inputting 1-2 colors then it'll create a 512x64 left-to-right gradient with the input as a base and then some quick maths for deciding what the other colors will be.
hopefully this will make future shaders easier to set up.
also worked on the Polyend Tracker + pureData synthesis integration. Still a lot of problems with it, I think I'm gonna drop it for now and use mp3s for the audio. And the workflow is annoying cus I have to
>write/arrange on polyend tracker + digitone
>export stems and samples from tracker
>rewrite digitone patches in pureData
>hope it sounds good since Unity doesnt allow ADSR or mixing for this set up, at most I can inject a vst via the dll import methods and then adjust vst settings for the final audio output from there, but then it won't run on anything other than Windows
Still some cool results despite the limitations (plz note: just basic quick demos, no audio level adjustments or anything yet):

opinion: anything with multiplayer should have the multiplayer locked until you complete the first "level" or area or challenge, or whatever your games set up is. within this portion of the game you need to complete before joining online, should require you to successfully use every mechanic the game has atleast once.
the idea being that theoretically, everyone playing on the multiplayer branch of the game will have "proven and know" how to actually play the game. make it as short as you want, separate to the main story or whatever.
im thinking games like insurgency or arma or whatever, where someone will join and take the commander or observer spot because its the only slot left/its got a weapon the other classes dont have and then do literally nothing with the role because they literally have never learned how to use the commander class or even tried.

I dunno, I just download the new version and start using that, it warns you when opening a project from an old version and says it will update it which will make it incompatible with that older version, so if you're unsure keep a backup.

just throwing this in there, being able to spin so quickly like that really breaks these kind of games for me, i think the solution is to slow down the turning radius (not painfully slow), but dictate the turning speed by how close you are to "aiming" at where your mouse is pointing. obviously im a shit explaininer, but im thinking
>you whip the mouse 180 degrees to behind you
>your turn speed means it takes about half a second to turn 90% of the way, 162 degrees
>then once its within 18 degrees, turning (rotating?) speed drops by half. fiddle with the actual specific numbers and speeds, but if you do it right, you should still be able to flick left and right and make quick shots at close targets, but not with pixel perfect percision unless you wait just a tiny bit longer for your aim to get perfectly on point.
so you can run straight down a hallway, still flick 90 degrees left, fire a few rounds through a doorway, keep going down the hall, flick 180s to the right, fire another few rounds through another doorway on the opposite side very quickly, and at those short ranges still be reasonably accurate, but not pixel perfect headshots unless you actually slow down.
probably makes no sense, but in my head, this makes smgs/pistols more viable, because you could tweak these to have very fast aiming for short ranges, without gimping longer range rifles. big ass rifles and sniper rifles would have a very slow, "outer radius speed", so doing a 180 will take a long time, no swinging a huge ass sniper rifle in cqb fights, but make the last 10%, that last 18 degrees, 100%. so once youve swung the giant weapon around and have it actually aimed and pointed, it becomes super accurate.
i am teh smratest ideas guy ever. give me money and programming team k thanx.

Generative AI like chat GPT is just a LLM (large language model) meaning it’s not actually thinking but putting words that would commonly appear together, this also works for code. The issue there is that it can often generate things that don’t exist, making it difficult to get the thing you need. Also going of the GPT (General Pre Trained) means that it can’t think outside the box of what it was trained on. So things that are updated take some time to be considered for certain AI based on how they up keep it.
It’s fine to use it but you have to take that stuff into consideration. With people it’s the chance you’ll see someone who has ran into your problem or is very knowledgeable.
There is a difference and you can do both man just be wary.
Chat GPT is bad because it can take away your critical thinking skills if you depend on it too much. (Don’t make it do all the work for you and if you do, make it tell you how each parts works so you can copy the format for different use cases. Overall asking it when your stuck helps a little)

It's going well. I took a chance and went to a Sonic Adventure Speedrunner Discord and asked if anyone was willing to try my game and critique it. Someone who was a World Record Speedrunner tried it and loved it, but had some major critiques, particularly about how slopes and speed are handled, how hard it is to stop yourself in the air, as well as he does not like how the dash is implemented. So, I made a build with his suggestions in mind to see if I like the changes. and honestly, he was right on the money with a lot of his critiques. The game plays much better now.
He showed it to his Speedrunner friends, and they've decided to try to find speedrun tech just for shits and giggles. Here is a glitch they found that, honestly, I'm not going to take out. It's pretty cool.

The only thing really wrong with that is the colors. It looks like you took the color palette of a corpo cyberpunk/sci-fi game and used it for a medieval fantasy setting. I think it would look fine if you went for more natural colors.

Bros I want to make a Third Person 3D Fantasy game. I'm very experienced in Godot 3D and am a high level artist, I can create pretty much anything in 3D, rig it, animate it and I'm a good painter. But I have a full time job and a new baby. I know making a full RPG alone is too much for a solo dev, but I find making a linear hack and slash too dull. I think i'd like to try for something like a Zelda-like gameplay structure where I don't have to deal with complex character builds, RPG systems or tons of different armor sets / weapons and can keep the "verbs" of what the character can do fairly minimal, but then allow for greater interactivity and reactivity with those limited verbs.
So even that is obviously quite difficult and complicated, so for graphics I want to also maintain a level of reasonable low complexity. I want the art style to be classic fantasy, with some stylization. Something that can have some character and exaggeration, but still represent violence and dark themes well. Think Warcraft 3 or Gothic or Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask.
On one hand, I could go super low poly retro and do a pure N64 style... but that might not offer enough detail to express my vision... and N64 grows more obscure and niche over time. I could go more detailed and get closer to a PS2 game or Gothic or Warcraft 3, but more detail = more work = more time = less content in the game.
What do you guys think? Basically I want to make a very small Ocarina of Time style action fantasy game with a darker yet stylized low/ mid poly art style... and I'm trying to nail down a targeted art style so I can build out my workflow. Any games I should look at as a refrence of an interesting art style to study?

I didn't replace the original head. I've always had the option to replace the head in any of the demos I've shown to the public. You can choose between the default head, Mario 64, Sonic Adventure 2 Sonic, Goemon and a model that is a special request from someone I know.
If you are interested in playing an extremely early alpha demo, here you go:
https://oshmakesgames.itch.io/ellie-and-osh-demo-day-63
It's very, very early in development. The level is just blocked out, that's not what the level is going to look like in the end.

Here's some arms I painted, but want to move away from first person going forward.
Better name? I decided on these 2 from a list I made:
Warp Crest
Void North Star
Warp crests are those things you take to travel to one area to another, and Void North Star was a take on how you're nowhere near home, and thus, don't have a North star to guide you home. So they're both relevant to the game. I think Void North Star sounds more cool, but Warp Crest is more relevant. Just having trouble deciding.
My dumbass thought entrance to Steam Next fest ended Aug 31st but it's actually the 25th so I'm rushing to make a steam page now for submission tomorrow so I can enter it in time.

like, the face will kinda rotate a bit but the hair will stay static or not be at the same rotation/perspective.
still, really digging your progress and game. I'm not super into platformers but I'll def give it a try and purchase once its out

So, it's actually on purpose, about the hair. The hair has a certain amount of rotation it does back and forth, depending on the direction the camera is and the direction the character is facing. It's similar to Mickey Mouse's ears. The hair faces more upward when facing away from or directly toward the camera, and it faces pretty much directly to emerge side you are facing when looking left/right.
And thank you very much! I'll definitely make sure to let people here know when it's finished... In a decade.

Blender is fine unless you're tying to do something extremely photo-realistic thought you have to be very specific and meticulous with it when moving models to a engine. My biggest gripe with it is the texture tools is non-existent so you have to pull it into another program to make halfway decent textures.

unfathomably based, the world needs more OOT-likes specially with a hack & slash kind of combat system. Is doable solo I believe, and I'm making good progress while having 0 3D knowledge prior to starting it out. I don't have a kid tho, so that'll probably take a lot of your time away. But if you already know your coding and your 3D shit, setting up a basic version of the game should take a few months at most.
>Any games I should look at as a refrence of an interesting art style to study?
For that particular style you talk about? Rune, Heretic II, Severance/Blade of Darkness, Arx Fatalis, maybe Enclave but I haven't played it lmao. On consoles, checkout Vagrant Story.

i dont think the bloat will hit godot too bad, what sets it apart are projects, eg. supporting python in godot, lua in godot, other programming languages in godot which dig into the internals of the engine and provide a "new api" meaning someone will get upset if its surface area changes too much. also theres quite a few software in the wild that uses a custom build of godot with just the renderer and not the physics/editor/sounds etc.
godot is quite shit but its extensibility is its redeeming factor

that multipass shader does not use more than 1 texture. it just uses 'screen_texture'
most multipass effects would use offscreen render target textures such as normal maps. Saving a custom rendering target to the GPU memory and modifying it in the first pass then using it as data to manipulate the screen in the seconds pass before discarding it from memory.
this is the level of control decent graphic programming requires.

I like how the gun is firing full rounds, casing and all. That's not sarcasm, I really do like it.
