I don't know how much time you've spent in the country and where you went, and I understand the gripe about revisiting the same places over and over again, however, unless you are an ultra weeb and you think walking in the middle of the rice fields in Iwate is "new or non-touristy", then you're not really missing out on anything once you've already been to most of what makes this country unique.
Highly suggest visiting a new country instead, again, unless you're an ultra weeb and you need to go to some place because it was mentioned once in an anime or you just have to go to Nebuta despite having gone to 10 other festivals already.
Nature/outdoor wise, the scenery doesn't change much at all. Kagoshima looks exactly like Aomori. There's nothing as drastic as let's say going from Bryce to Yosemite.
