He has righteous anger behind him and truly comes off as a tortured soul that wants the suffering to end. I think it makes him retroactively better in DS1 because you know how far he is willing to go to bring about the Last Stranding. As in he genuinely believes that it's the only option left and no amount of band aids can fix the world.

Strangely he confesses to be fond of Sam, Fragile and Amelie but he's clearly too far gone to get better and redeem himself.
