he Loves Sam because he see's in Sam the same sort of manipulated being as himself, he's deeply in love with Fragile from their years working together, but knows she despises him, and he views Amelie as the Parental figure he never had.

he's just commited to his revenge, he knows he's done far too much evil to ever come back.

I haven't played the second game yet, but isn't Amelie staying on the beach too? And Higgs worships her, he should be happy with 1000 years being her only company.

it felt real and raw, he wanted so much to just.. be with Sam and the other people he's fond of, but he's just so mad at his life, at Amelie, and the rugpull of ending the world she convinced him was his Destiny.

to me, it feels like he's half attempting to get Sam to end him, just so he can be punished for his crimes, and also he's just trying to have one last fun moment with Sam with their dumb Guitar battle.

A lot of people never read his journals and have no idea about his fucked up childhood where his abusive uncle beat him up and kept him locked in a bunker.

When he kills him and discovers his powers in the process suddenly he feels special. Then Amelie comes along and makes him feel like a chosen hero.

He was also described as a good-natured and ambitious legendary porter by the people who worked for him when his sanity was intact. It's a classic tragic downfall and Sam could have easily turned out the same way if it wasn't for the right connections that he made during his journey.

A prequel game starring Higgs could be really well done in the same way that MGS3 showed the downfall of Big Boss.
