I've looked at alot of manga, and at alot of western comics.
There's a bunch of things that they do differently which are completely separate from the art itself
>panel gutters
in manga they vary in width, in comics they are all the same
>speech bubbles
in manga they almost never break the panel border, in comics they frequently do
>speed lines and sfx
in manga they are used liberally, even for unimportant moments, in comics they are almost never used except for important moments
I'm not trying to make a comics vs manga debate, what I'm trying to point out is that... these things are innocuous. It makes very little difference whether the speech bubbles break the panel borders or not.
What this highlights is that there is clearly no interaction between the two industries.
Comic artists are not looking at manga, and manga artists are not looking at comics, they are isolated.
