Play any of the really challenging community made test chambers and you'll notice they all cover their test chambers in dark surfaces as well. Because the challenge in portal 2 is figuring out how the different assets you're given in the game fit together and what order you are meant to do what. "Where on this wall do I put this portal?" was never a challenge.
