It's not so much illiteracy but people having a massive chip on their shoulder for Toriel/Asgore, and the fact the game released over a decade ago.
Both Toriel and Asgore were correct in some things, and wrong in others. Toriel being extremely pacifist/kind towards Frisk can be seen as a motivator for the player to not just mindlessly kill every monster he/she comes across. Toriel was the "I want you to do good/not all monster are bad" first impression.

Meanwhile Asgore set everything up to actually free the monsters (he originally collected the previous six souls), and even concedes to freeing you.
