A less talked about problem when it comes to learning is lacking a mentor of any kind. You have people attempting to figure everything out on their own. the problem with that is that you end up directing your focus to everything that won't actually matter. They tend to get caught in trivial things like what brush the other person is using or as he says in the post mortem section of the video getting stuck on process and tools. In order to learn a new concept, it's important to have the knowledge required to understand it. You're not going to get a kid to do addition or subtraction when they do not possess the idea of counting for instance. Similarly, how do you expect to draw a face when you have no conception of how to record proportions?

>He's bad, and worst of all, unaware of how bad he is
>completely missing the forest for the trees
Yes, most definitely. You don't know what you don't know. Look at the exercise he does with the swatches at the end of the video. What practical purpose does it serve? You will not be evaluating swatches independently from each other when painting. It is a niche scenario that won't get you better at painting. More importantly than that, which artists have even done this as an exercise digitally? Doing it with real paint, you'd at least practice mixing and even then you might as well just make a painting.
