for distortion and overdrive to work on bass you need to split/blend the signal.
Just putting a distortion pedal will kill your low end and it will sound like absolute dogshit.

Either get something like Boss LS-2 or the Tri-Parallel-Mixer from EHX so you can split your bass signal into two signals so you can then distort one and blend it back with the other clean signal. Or get designated bass pedals that have a blend function built-in like most of the Darkglass stuff but those are very hit-and-miss and expensive, if you buy cheap bass pedals the blend will often be dogshit.
Best solution is to get a split pedal and then you can use any guitar distortion pedal on bass without it sounding like shit.
