Honestly I think the only reason these stupid video essays are popular because they give people background noise. I can't think of anyone willingly paying attention to some video that's just a recap of a game nitpicking parts they don't like while saying nothing that has substance for hours at end.

It was, but mostly for the Source engine. I think it's safe to say that, 20 years later, it doesn't hold much of a candle to HL1.
