The only worthwhile vidya essayists are Matt Matosis and Noah Caldwell Jarvis
Matt represents pure gameplay, Noah represents pure narrative/aesthetics.
No current YouTuber is intelligent and well-spoken/skilled enough to cover every aspect of a game simultaneously, hence why the above two are successful. They know their limitations and choose to not dive into milquetoast commentary, instead focusing on elements they actually understand and can make insightful critiques of.

I don't think he really fits that definition, tho the end result is just as bad. Either I don't have the attention span for his videos, or they're just so "maximalist" and scattershot that clear takeaways get completely lost in the sauce.

He'll talk about what feels like every single thought he's had on the game, in whatever amount necessary to convey his point and the evidence to back it up (not proportionally to how central it is to some thesis). One minute he'll explain how using abilities feels like casting spells in WoW, the next he'll lay out how to reproduce his methodology for determining how difficulty settings interact with the armor reduction math.
That's on top of autisticly editing the video so that frequently the footage shown creates some joke with the line currently being read, often "just for myself, nobody else will get this", as he said.

I've watched several of his videos, and I think he said plenty of things that weren't just recapping the game, but I almost never remember an interesting takeaway.
Either it's me or the signal-to-noise ratio is just terrible. And it seems like the long process is eating away at his life and sanity. So who's this for? Just people who need sleeping aids?

He says he gives a quick rundown on what happens chronologically in every other sentence, without any opinion, to generate a sort of structure/skeleton for the review.
And after that he fills in the gaps with what of this made sense, what didn't, what was well done or failed, why he thinks that, how could it have been improved instead etc.

Sure, he could remove half of the script because it's summarizing things but then if he talks about a very specific quest in the middle of nowhere that includes Morvudd and Hammond on Skellige, you'd ask yourself "who the fuck are they, what is the quest even about, slow down".

The simplest answer is that there's just a very big gulf in quality between him and nearly every other similar channel which is immediately noticeable if you compare one of his videos to 99% of others. I appreciate that's essentially a longwinded way to say "he's just better" but that genuinely is the crux of it. The only other similar channels which I can't think of ever having blatantly gotten something wrong and predicated an argument on their misunderstandings thereafter are HyperBitHero and B-Mask (though I've also heard RunningShine is good), TheGamingBrit and Turbo Button are/were respectively also clearly a tier above most as well but even they've gotten tripped up on that sort of thing once or twice

More so than pseuds like Joseph Anderson I think types like The Electric Underground are arguably the worst, because his content is about as rife with double standards and inconsistent standpoints and poor argumentation as your average Youtube comment section but he creates the illusion of thinking about game design more deeply than he really does by inventing his own terminology sometimes

I think he definitely wears a mask while streaming games his community chooses for him, he know they pay the bills.
His best streams, imo, is the Lies of P DLC. It was out of his usual schedule; he was noticeably relaxed, chat was chill and a fun stream overall.
No hard "gotchas," baiting or fake positivity. He could, and did, argue with chat without risking schizos spamming replies, leading to good insights and interactions.
The farther a game is from modern anime (isekai tier stuff), the better the stream quality and output get. A shame his community is full of discord retards now.

It's funny how opinions can split so easily. I hate Matthew's videos, he has a dull voice and his "analysis" is completely vapid and incohesive. Nobody else on YouTube comes close and only a few very old written gaming blogs are better than him.

I have barely seen much about Higurashi but I can 100% believe the same happens in Higurashi except maybe being more cringe.

There's no denying that Ryukishi is fairly socially conscious and doesn't have sexist intentions or meaningfuly bad beliefs at all but many anime tropes involving women are absoliutely embarrasing and have horrible optics.

The first Umineko stream has Battler joking about groping his cousins's tits because her chest has grown since she's become older, this is something we just accept because we know weeb content just does this sometimes, but if you really think about it and compare it to how it would read in real life... a guy doing that irl would absolutely be completely disgusting and have horrible vibes there's no way around it, it's just anime content normalizes thsi sort of interaction ,alongside the classic "uwu let's sneak in le women's hot spring area! In an objective and logical playing field I agree with what you say, but out of my own experience consuming japanese content over a period of years, the truth is that much of what comes from japan is creepy and icky because they unironically like being that way and think it's based to write that shit. Both of his Fallout 4 videos are his best work, in my opinion. Fallout 4 is an interesting game because the media circus surrounding it is has created several contradictory caricatures that, uniquely, run in parallel with each other. It's a game that nobody will ever reach a consensus on, and Joe was the very first critic to point this out, all the way back in November 2015. He discusses the bizarre disconnect between critics gushing over it like they did for Skyrim despite the technical problems, how the audience came to hate it automatically because of all the foundational changes (and how that's unfair), how some people think it didn't change ENOUGH (which curiously isn't a mutually exclusive stance with the previous assertion), and how the developers themselves didn't seem to be too sure of what exactly they were making either.
It's an extremely nuanced and complicated topic because it isn't just about people having a mechanical or narrative preference or the devs being clueless, it's actually to do with WHY so many people can play the EXACT same game and seperately come away with simultaneously true statements that appear contradictory, but actually aren't ("Fallout 4 removed skill points!" vs "Fallout 4 does have skill points!", both are true, but they look polar, right?).
