Pulseaudio was written by the systemd author (long ago when systemd didn't even exist yet) to fix the situation that every desktop environment had its own audio server. It got pushed by Red Hat and most mainstream distros. But it had its large share of bugs, even many years later. All this time ALSA simply seemed superior and simpler, at least for simple use cases. Later I observed how some known pulse bugs didn't get fixed, or only very slowly, because it didn't have enough developers. The original developer (Lennart Poettering) stopped working on it long ago.
Pipewire seems like this, but the same shit all over ago. Pipewire even depends on BOTH Pulse and ALSA.
