It was never about gpus - it was about cpu thoughput. Namely not being so dependant on a single thread as bulldozer and the upcoming zen had Intel beat in MT performance but couldn't match them at all if you just wanted a single cpu thread to scream along. The more effective use of the cpu also smoothed over a lot of the issues the radeon drivers had with strangling a single cpu thread but this was never the main goal.
