They couldn’t. That’s why. It would have been a very difficult task for a small country like that to conquer a giant continent spanning empire even if the entire world had cooperated and looked the other. It became an impossible task when America and the Western democracies embargoed them and also began helping their enemies. Their insane militarists basically got them in way over their head and stuck in an unwinnable war.

Yeah. The invasion of China was completely doomed to fail from day one. Dan Carlin compared it to a person trying to eat an entire elephant in one sitting. Way too ambitious for a smaller country with limited resources that could be cut off easily. The Japanese always held out hope that the Chinese government would at some point eventually “see reason” and surrender and agree to join the Axis as a Japanese puppet state. But that didn’t happen, the Chinese government just fled inward into the country.
