I have pretty much every 3rd edition rulebook, just missing some codex supplements. But I just want the game to be cool again.

I was thinking something closer to what variant armylists used to be in 3rd. Like, you can have the generic detachemnt with access to the entire roster but very generalist rules and then more specialized detachments for specific subfactions/playstyles with their own rosters. There's a number of ways to do this and I don't think the current one is bad per se (though variant subfactions should be more limited in what detachments they can take) but I like the 3rd edition system because it keeps things tidy so they are easier to balance and simple to understand.
