This particular dance is very "obon odori" style, and some have noted that it's reminiscent of an "eejanaika / ええじゃないか" dance. Means something like "oh whatever, who cares anymore?", and apparently they were very popular around the Boshin War / Bakumatsu period. Very tough times indeed. Some danced to summon rain or good harvest, but for some they were political protests, relieving stress the only way they could.
