Is it true that the classical composers heard the music in their head before writing anything down or even playing it?

It has recently been brought to my attention that some musicians can practice their instrument solely by using their imagination. They can 'visualize' the instrument and 'hear' it in their mind without any external references! Amazing or they are full of shit?
