Yeah, the entire point of MGS4 was to END the series right then and there. They literally killed or written off every major character that could be the protagonist so the story couldn't continue (MGR dont count), while also tying up every loose end. It's just that Kojima had to pull shit out of everyone's ass to do it.

Peace Walker was just a vita spin off and MGSV is literally him saying to move on from the series
