however if it was a ship then it is possible that they did a braking burn outside our view and are coasting slowly into the system in order to appear like a comet

yes, but i enjoy speculating
given the trajectory it is physically possible for a fusion drive ship to have left Proxima Centauri b around 70-100 years ago, accelerating to speeds (that aren't that wild) until halfway, followed by a deceleration burn most of the rest of the way with a maneuver to disguise their point of origin and appear "comet like" while setting up the supposes "ideal entry" to put their final deceleration burn on the opposite side of the sun.
all plausible within conservative estimates of theoretical fusion drives
JWST took some pics about a week ago and the team reviewing them scheduled public release 3 months out so then we'll have something more to go on (which will most likely reveal that it is another "interesting" comet like Omoumua, not Rama)
If it was Ramans though that'd be pretty cool.
