Douchebag characters transforming into heroes only really works for male characters. Kratos (the original one, not the crappy one that completely butchers his character), Kain, Fygoon, every single one of them begins as an arrogant fool until a great failure causes them to seek redemption. In general, that's just how men operate: our greatest opportunity to see success comes only after a catastrophic failure.
Women, on the other hand, are supposed to be the supporters to the journey of Man: they should seek to help us to improve and become better. When a woman is a cunt, that just sours her character because she is no longer a supporter, but an enemy that must be destroyed. Now, there is a fine line between making a woman character stern yet still supportive and just making her unlikeable, so be mindful of that line.
