Don't forget this was an engine designed for a street naked. Peak hp is largely dictated by how much air the engine can swallow and exhale in a given unit of time and how hard it compresses air fuel mixture. Being a 12v engine it'll always be at a disadvantage to a 16v unit of the same cc. But at every rpm below peak power and the R9 will be pulling harder. Just compare the cb650 and mt07 here and it's the same story.
Still. I didn't like yam's triple when I rode it for lacking any character.
All things considered I don't think cc to cc comparisons are as good as weight lbs & purchase price. This is where Suzuki's 1000cc gsxs1000 steamrolls the 900cc naked class
