Society functions properly when there are enough punitive measures for people who abide by their human nature. It's not as much as it's necessary for the men who eat good to suffer for it, rejecting work, lying and fornicating recklessly, drinking or drugs, it's that it has to be a sufficient level of suffering for the law-abiding citizen to not feel like a complete chump. It's about disguising the humiliation of being a cog.

With that said, for some reason I've never seen a genuinely good man on that end of the law. It's always this slackjawed little faggot with infinite amounts of bravado and narcissism, and it's never "oh I was breaking the law for someone else's sake." It was always to line his pockets, blow his wad, or quiet the demand of his own responsibilities. I grew up with guys like this, and I still just feel gross around them, like I'm talking to a child who's 30 years past the point of being cute.
