The surrounding controversy of the modding community playing morality police and not allowing you to change the player model. Racism aside, I really hated his haircut and went to download a different player model only to be scolded for being a racist. It made me become a real life racist and I now mistreat black people every chance I get.
Seriously though, I thought the first game was overhyped streamer bait. I bought it because it was one of the few titles available in VR, but I just didn't find the core gameplay compelling enough to finish the game once I completed the tutorial and learned all the mechanics. It's underwater minecraft... woohooo.... It's even more boring than minecraft because at least minecraft lets me express my creativity. I found the basebuilding restrictive in that I couldn't craft a base with different materials and could only choose how to arrange my underwater modular hamster terrarium. Once you get jumpscared by a couple of big scary fish you realize that's all the game has to offer and there's nobody to pay me for making a silly face at my computer when I'm alone in my room.
I assume that the sequel didn't sell for the same reason a minecraft sequel wouldn't sell. What else is there to the game but grinding for more resources to upgrade your shit? Why do it again in the sequel? Minecraft has replayability because I can design something new and different each time, subnautica does not.
