I used to imagine them like Draenei from WoW but more like red or somewhat pale/peach like >>725058540 and without the face tentacles / more human/vampiric face. Cloven/hoofed feet and all that as well.
I think that was their original intention too, and as a result was likely part of the inspiration for Draenei even.
But as other anons have said, they were a bit more "standardized" and additionally, the nu-D&D fans that moved in started playing them as a bunch of purple and blue haired weirdos with "Demonic" quirks. And WotC also kind of played around this as well.
I always thought Tieflings were incredibly interesting, and its very disappointing how they are portrayed now. I thought they were kind of alright in BG3 for the most part at least visually.
