I remember when Crysis 2 came out on PC, it was touting its tessellation, but in practice it was shown to be adding polygons to things like flat concrete barriers, so you have flat barriers with thousands of useless polygons. It did feel like at some point devs just seemed to stop optimizing their games. I feel like it really hit around the time the PS4 and Xbox One were coming out. The games run like shit but you also see all kinds of performance cost cutting. I remember playing Watch Dogs when it came out only to see even on max settings ridiculous pop in while its performance also seeming poor for how it looked and its amount of detail. That and games are now 100+ GB in file size.
