It's easier to maintain and cheaper. Wearing a wig costs less than having your hair done by a professional. If you're doing it yourself, you still have to spend several hours putting it into a protective style which demands a degree of skill.

Wearing your natural hair as a black woman used to be considered unprofessional, if you wanted a job in the past you either had to choose between destroying your hair with cancer chemicals to make it straight, or a wig. It's also a holdover from that era
