Also Trackmania2(Canyon) did something similar. 5-7years after launch they made a patch that force downloaded itself if you ever connected online trough the game.
The patch removed massive parts of the game lighting and shadows to owngrade the visuals to make their new game look more appealing. The patch also altered the game physics making some parts of the game literally unplayable.
