Treasure Planet was great, received universal critical acclaim, and is loved by a lot of people to this day. The creators of the movie were so passionate about it that they immediately started working on a sequel and even planning a TV series and prequel movie, among many other projects. They wanted it to be a big franchise. The reason why Treasure Planet failed commercially was because higher-ups at Disney decided to put the theatrical release of the movie in the worst time slot possible and also put as little budget into its advertising campaign as possible. It has been documented many times. Disney executives basically WANTED the movie to fail because they wanted an excuse to stop making traditional 2D animated films and go full 3D because of DreamWorks' big success with Shrek in 2001
