You should replay the game if you haven't recently. At least in the final mix version, it's shown numerous times that Riku does not trust Maleficent. But he has very few options. He's got a girl to find, and he needs power and a guide to traverse the worlds. Maleficent is offering both to him. Sora offered him company, but Donald was already shooting the idea down before Riku could even consider accompanying them.

Basically, he accepted Maleficent's help very reluctantly because he had no one else to turn to. The irony is, if he had only heeded her advice, if he had kept the darkness at arm's length, she probably would have been a good caretaker/benefactor for him. But he wanted too much power, too quickly, for all the wrong reasons.

You should really be asking why the fuck he listened to Ansem despite witnessing the consequences of letting the darkness in numerous times and Ansem being there when his island was swallowed up.

One of the things that pissed me off in the ending to KH2 was the game forcing you to make a truce with Maleficent just so you could focus on the fighting the Organization instead.
At that point, you didn't even know the goals of the Organization. They had done, maybe, one evil thing (Kidnapping, which Maleficent herself had done many times over). Whereas Maleficent was doing visible, tangible, known evil.
I would have made sure she was taken care of before further investigation of the Organization.

As someone that replayed KH:BBS on critical recently, Terra's keyblades look and feel GOOD. Like he is seriously beating you down with this monstrous weapon.

I know it's a pleb choice, but the original Kingdom Key might be in my top 3. The fact that KH3 allowed me to level that thing up so it's always viable fostered that connection tenfold. Looking back at KH1, Riku did nothing wrong.
Sora was lucky to find Dolan and Gooby to tell him how shit worked in that multiverse. Riku was alone and had only the villains to teach him, and even had a coma-induced Kairi as hostage to coerce him into obeying them.
By the time Ansem possessed him "for good" at Hollow Bastion, he has already given up being the "chosen one" after seeing Sora stealing his key blade, his waifu, having friends and shit. It took Mickey a lot of effort to convince him that it wasn't too late to turn back, go home and be a family man, because the dude was bummed after being misled into the gangsta life without knowing any better and having no other option.
And all this started because he was bored of staying on that island forever and found a weird looking hobo offering him a way out, nothing more.

Its not horribly hard to keep track of, but its not surprising people get filtered. Writing has a rule to not have multiple character who's names start with the same letter cause you will filter a portion of the readers. Kingdom Hearts goes the opposite direction and has a character with multiple different names and different appearance.
