I wanted Chrysalis to be able to hold her own against Celestia because Celestia's magic was from a place of love for her ponies. It meant that Chrysalis was still taking damage, but some of the magic was being absorbed, inadvertently making her recover and get stronger at the same time. It wouldn't be until that love started to turn into rage that Chrysalis would realize there's something significantly "brighter" in Celestia, giving the audience their first clue as to why Celestia was trying to find a successor.
