It is in fact an intentional design element specifically for the kit to do this.
You'll have to wait around 6 hours for me to get home to post my collection. Unfortunately I don't have much means to provide proof of all the kits I no longer have so you'll have to take my word that I was born to a wealthy family and got a ton of kits that I mangled growing up.
