The Democrats became socialists (or in modern terms, Marxist) under Andrew Jackson and his populism. Once Jackson got the ball rolling on universal manhood suffrage, stripping the natural elites of our right to rule the land, the socialist train left the station and has, ever since then, been a runaway train.

Andrew Jackson razed New Orleans to the ground a couple weeks after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent that formally ended the war of 1812 because it took that long for news to cross the Atlantic. Iran is in such disarray, and decisions are being made so quickly, that I wouldn't be surprised if some hastily promoted general just didn't get news of the ceasefire.
