Pretty much everyone always goes with the idea that Duke has been forgotten and has to recover his place in the world. True to life, yes but too obvious. Plus this isn't a character with any worthwhile introspection. It worked for BJ just because he barely had a defined character to begin with so the whole tired warrior ended up working well.
If anything it should be more of a Doom 2016 situation where Duke has been captured for years, aliens have taken over Earth and once he's released he takes back the planet, making all the usual adoration the NPC's give him actually justifiable.
